Rio de Janeiro (TASSAWAR NEWS): Brazil’s Supreme Court has convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro of conspiring to overthrow democracy, handing him a 27-year and 3-month prison sentence.
A five-member bench delivered the verdict with 4 judges voting in favor of conviction and 1 judge voting for acquittal. Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest, did not appear in court during the proceedings.
Bolsonaro’s lawyer announced plans to appeal the ruling, demanding that the case be heard by the full bench of 11 justices.
Trump Calls Verdict “Disappointing”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Bolsonaro, called the ruling “disappointing and unexpected.”
Protests Erupt in Brazil
Following the court’s decision, protests broke out across multiple Brazilian cities in support of Bolsonaro.
It is worth noting that Bolsonaro faced charges for allegedly attempting to seize power after the 2022 elections, in which he lost the presidency.
