Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan has announced civil awards for several distinguished figures from the sports fraternity, including legendary cricketer Shahid Afridi, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the nation.
According to the official notification, the awards will be conferred on March 23, Pakistan Day, during a special ceremony at the President House. The honors aim to acknowledge the achievements of national heroes who have brought pride and honor to Pakistan on both domestic and international platforms.
Shahid Afridi Among the Honorees
Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi, widely admired for his explosive batting style and match-winning performances, has been named among the recipients. Afridi, who led Pakistan to numerous memorable victories and also contributed significantly through humanitarian work via the Shahid Afridi Foundation, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“This award is not just for me, but for the fans and the entire nation that supported me throughout my career,” Afridi said in a statement.
Recognition of Sporting Excellence
Apart from Afridi, various other sports figures from cricket, hockey, squash, and athletics will also be honored. Officials emphasized that the awards reflect the government’s commitment to acknowledging the role of sports in promoting unity, youth engagement, and Pakistan’s positive image worldwide.
The civil awards, which include Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Pride of Performance, and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, are among the highest civilian honors in the country. Many athletes receiving the awards have represented Pakistan in global competitions, inspiring generations of young talent.
