Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan: 20 Dead, Over 100 Injured

Kabul (TASSAWAR NEWS) – A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan, leaving at least 20 people dead and more than 100 injured.

According to international media reports, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.2, with its epicenter near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province at a depth of 8 kilometers.

The tremor struck at 11:47 p.m. local time, followed by another aftershock measuring 4.5 just 20 minutes later in the same province, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed in a social media post that the quake caused both human and material losses. He said local authorities, along with residents, were actively engaged in rescue and relief operations, while emergency teams from the central government and nearby provinces were dispatched to assist in recovery efforts.

The tremors were also felt across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Mardan, Chakwal, Taxila, and Wah Cantt.

Pakistan’s Seismological Center confirmed the quake was measured at magnitude 6, with a depth of 15 kilometers, and centered in southeastern Afghanistan. It also reported aftershocks of magnitude 4.6 in Hangu, Malakand, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chitral, and Peshawar at 12:38 a.m.
