Paris – A French parliamentary committee has recommended a sweeping ban on social media for children under 15, alongside a nighttime “digital curfew” for teens aged 15 to 18.
Committee chief Arthur Delaporte said he would also file a criminal complaint against TikTok for “endangering lives,” accusing the company of knowingly allowing harmful algorithms to operate. The move follows a lawsuit brought by seven families in 2024, who claimed the platform exposed their children to self-harm content.
While TikTok insists user safety is its “top priority” and notes that AI tools catch 98% of harmful content, French lawmakers argue moderation remains inadequate and rules are easy to bypass.
The committee further suggested expanding the under-15 ban to under-18s within three years if platforms fail to comply with European regulations. Under the proposed “curfew,” teens would be barred from accessing social media between 10 pm and 8 am.
