Lahore (TASSAWAR NEWS) Today marks the 60th martyrdom anniversary of Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider), the hero of the 1965 Pakistan-India War, who wrote an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice. When the enemy attacked, Major Aziz Bhatti stood like a wall of steel to defend Lahore.
Born on 16 August 1928 in Hong Kong, Major Aziz Bhatti’s family returned to Pakistan before independence and settled in Ladian village, Gujrat. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 17 Punjab Regiment.
During the 1965 War, the Lahore front was under heavy attack. Major Aziz Bhatti was assigned to halt Indian advancement in the Burki sector. As Company Commander, he stayed on the frontline with his troops. From 6th to 12th September, his company launched relentless counterattacks, stopping the enemy’s progress.
For six days and nights, Major Aziz Bhatti and his men fought with unmatched courage, ensuring the enemy could not advance even an inch towards Lahore. On 12 September 1965, he embraced martyrdom when an enemy tank shell struck his left shoulder. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the highest military award, Nishan-e-Haider.
Prime Minister’s Tribute
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid rich tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti on his 60th martyrdom anniversary, saying his courage and sacrifice will always be remembered. The PM said that by repelling enemy attacks for five consecutive days, Aziz Bhatti thwarted India’s nefarious designs to capture Lahore. He added that the entire nation feels proud of Major Aziz Bhatti and his family.
Pakistan Army’s Tribute
The Pakistan Armed Forces, through ISPR, also honored Major Aziz Bhatti’s sacrifice. Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, CJCSC General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu jointly paid glowing tribute, calling his martyrdom an example of faith, courage, determination, and patriotism.
A special ceremony was also held at Major Aziz Bhatti’s mausoleum in Gujrat, attended by GOC 17 Division Major General Azhar Yaseen, who laid a floral wreath, offered fateha, and prayed for Pakistan’s progress and prosperity.
