Narowal (TASSAWAR NEWS) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing Pakistan, stressing that the country must build new dams without wasting time.
Addressing a meeting in Narowal, the Prime Minister stated that after Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab is now facing severe flooding as river waters overflow. He expressed gratitude to NDMA, Rescue 1122, and other institutions for their relief efforts, while also mourning the loss of lives caused by the disaster.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the role of federal ministers, local political leadership, civil administration, and the Pakistan Army, highlighting that an effective early-warning system helped minimize losses. He noted that Pakistan is among the countries most affected by climate change.
The Prime Minister emphasized that in the coming years, the challenge of climate change must be tackled proactively. He called for stronger disaster management systems and greater mobilization of rescue services. He further stated that Pakistan has the capacity to build multiple small dams, which can enhance water storage capacity. “If the federation and provinces work together, we will find solutions,” he added.
Referring to the devastating 2022 floods, Shehbaz Sharif reminded that Sindh and Balochistan were the worst hit, where millions of acres of ready-to-harvest crops were destroyed. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz conducted an aerial visit of flood-affected areas to review the situation.
