PM Shehbaz Sharif Announces Reopening of Domestic Gas Connections Nationwide

Islamabad (Tassawar News): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially announced the reopening of domestic gas connections across Pakistan, fulfilling one of the nation’s most persistent public demands. Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the Prime Minister stated that this decision marks a “historic step toward restoring public convenience and national energy balance.”

Background and Context

During his address, PM Shehbaz recalled that when the PDM government assumed power in 2022, the country faced a severe energy shortage. The government was under tremendous pressure to resume gas connections, but limited gas supply and rising import costs prevented immediate action. Despite completed pipeline infrastructure and available funding, gas was simply not available at that time.

The Prime Minister said the situation has now improved, allowing the government to initiate new gas connections powered by RLNG (Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas) — ensuring both quality and reliability for domestic users.

Economic and Social Impact

This policy is expected to directly benefit millions of households awaiting gas supply for cooking and heating, especially ahead of the winter season. Analysts say the move could also reduce the burden on LPG and firewood usage, cutting household energy costs and improving air quality in urban and rural areas.

The reopening is being viewed as a continuation of Nawaz Sharif’s energy legacy, when massive power outages were eliminated after 2013. This new phase of energy expansion, observers believe, could also boost public trust and industrial stability in the post-crisis economy.

Challenges Ahead

However, experts caution that Pakistan still faces import dependency on RLNG, global price fluctuations, and infrastructure maintenance issues. Long-term success will require diversification of local energy sources, efficient billing systems, and transparent allocation of new connections.
