Lahore: (Tassawar News) Pakistan’s sports community is mourning the loss of Muhammad Shafiq, the celebrated two-time South Asian Federation (SAF) Games gold medalist and former national weightlifting champion, who passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 54 years old.
According to the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation, Shafiq had been battling health issues for some time. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a coach at Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), mentoring the next generation of weightlifters and continuing his lifelong dedication to the sport.
A Decorated Career
Muhammad Shafiq’s name became synonymous with strength, discipline, and national pride in the early 1990s. He won gold medals at the 1991 and 1995 SAF Games, representing Pakistan with distinction at the regional level.
Over the course of his career, he held the title of National Weightlifting Champion for 11 consecutive years, a record that few athletes in the country have matched. His dominance on the domestic circuit and consistent international performances earned him widespread respect in Pakistan’s sporting fraternity.
Beyond regional events, Shafiq represented Pakistan in multiple international competitions, bringing home medals and recognition that elevated the nation’s status in weightlifting across Asia and beyond.

The Pakistan Weightlifting Federation expressed deep sorrow over his passing, calling Shafiq a “pillar of national sports and a true champion who inspired countless athletes.”
